Advance Timing by Modifying the Trigger Wheel
4 degree wheel is recommended for the Valkyrie Interstate and Gold Wing.
6 degree wheel is recommended for the standard and tourer Valkyrie!
The procedure is straight forward and can be done in just 30 Minutes.
The benefit of advancing the timing is better Fuel Mileage and improved Performance.
Please read the Full article before attempting the modification.
Remove the timing belt cover.
The bolt circled in red has some sealant on it and comes out a bit harder then the other bolts.
We first removed the Crank case bolt cover to make it easier to remove the timing belt cover.
This allows us to grab the timing belt cover and pull it loose after the bolts have been removed.
The cover can be removed sliding it to the right.
We placed all bolts in order, so that we don't mix up any bolts when we re-install the timing belt cover.
The T1.2 Mark on the Drive Pulley needs to be lined up with the index Mark on the Crankcase.
Here is a picture with the T1.2 mark NOT lined up.
WE highlighted the T1.2 mark with a black marker.
The UP mark on the left pulley needs also to be lined up with the index mark on he case.
Here is a picture of the left pulley UP mark not lined up.
Again, we highlighted the UP mark with a black marker.
To align the T1.2 and the U marks with their Index marks, we use a wrench on the Crank Case Bolt and turn counter-clockwise.
Once, all 3 points are lined up, we can loosen the Crank Case Bolt.
Put the bike in gear!
I used a wrench on the left pulley bolt and blocked it with my knee.
I now placed a wrench on the crank Case Bolt and hit it with a hammer to break it loose.
This method worked best for me and it did not move the crank case.
Only loosen the crank case bolt, do not remove at this time!
Now loosen the bolts of the left tensioner.
Push the tensioner up and slide the belt off.
Remove the Crank case bolt and the first disk.
Slide the belt of the pulley.
Now remove the pulley.
You are now at the trigger wheel.
The trigger wheel has a marking on it OUT or OUTSIDE.
We used a piece of electrical tape to mark the out side of the trigger wheel.
We will be removing some material from the key tab, marked red at the top of the above image.
The Tab measures 0.175"
A 4 degree advance can be established by removing 0.030" and a 6 degree advance can be established by removing 0.045".
In this case, we need a 6 degree advance and will be removing 0.045" from the left side of the key tab as shown on the next picture.
The area in blue will be removed so that the key tab is going to be 0.130".
When done it will look like this:
We are now ready to re-install everything.
Start by placing the trigger wheel back on, followed by the Pulley, the belt, front disk and crank case bolt (hand tight only for now).
While installing, turn the trigger wheel counter clock wise.
Make sure that before you tighten the crank case bolt, that the trigger wheel is in the most counter clockwise position.
Slide the belt back under the tensioner and slide the tensioner on the belt. Secure the tensioner by tightening up the 2 bolts. (19ftp)
Tighten the crank case bolt(59ftp) ensuring the trigger wheel is still in the most counter clockwise position.
Double and triple check and make 100% sure all marks are still aligned !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Place the timing belt cover back on and you are finished.
It is recommended to use 91 octane fuel.
The advanced timing will also run the bike leaner.
Jet Kits are available the Valkyrie at CarbJetKits
